As we continue making apps, especially as we are just starting out, a very positive and strong mindset is required.

Lets face it, the Mobile App Industry changes daily and with these changes come a lot of moments of challenge.

Just recently for example, due to Hurricane Sandy, many app developers would have experienced a variation in their sales numbers.  Some days you do well, some days you do not so well.

The challenge is to keep your mindset positive and focused on the ultimate goal.

What is your goal with this business?
What is your overall vision?
Why did you get into this business?
What do you wish to accomplish this year? 3 Years? 5 Years? 10 Years?

These are some of the questions that you should ask yourself about this business.  The reason is that when things get tough, you’ll be sitting back asking yourself, “Is this really worth it?  Why am I doing this?”

There are times in this business that make you really shake your head.  For example when brand new devices are launched and you have to re-code or re-develop your apps which will cost you a lot of money and time you didn’t anticipate.  During these times the above questions come into play.  If you can successfully keep your vision and goal in front of  you at all times and have Faith in a higher power that you’re on the right path, then you’ll continue forward a lot more easily.

I’ve seen many who have started in this business who end up jumping ship when these challenges come up.  My first app for example took 8 months to make, thousands of dollars invested and it turned out to be a flop.  Like it or not, you will face a BAD sales day or even a bad app after a lot of investment.  It happens to the best of us!  There will be days your app just gets no movement, and you’ll sit there wondering if you would have made more doing something else in life.  Other days you’ll jump for joy wanting to party because of your great success.

A positive and motivated mindset thus is a requirement of running a successful app business!

So how do you develop and keep that positive mindset?

There WILL be times where you just don’t understand why things are happening.  Sometimes you’ll be working on an app that either just won’t launch or is just bringing you issue after issue.  This business requires some level of faith in something greater than ourselves.  Call it God, The Universe or whatever you believe in, but when the going gets tough, you’ll need something greater than yourself to keep you going!

I cannot stress on this enough!  Take time out every now and again to go to the gym, get the healthy food that you need, etc.  Many new app developers and business owners are computer-a-holics.  Sitting in front of the computer/tablet all day working on their businesses.  Coffees and Energy Drinks can lead to real crazy destruction.  For myself I once went on a 3 week push of 2-3 energy drinks daily, then a coffee, less than 2 hours of sleep and chocolate, and Fast Food!  You can imagine what happened!  I started hallucinating after the first few days (I constantly thought there were aliens or some ghosts watching me while I was working with my Indian staff online at 4am or that weird bugs were crawling over me – AND SOMETIMES THERE WERE SPIDERS!), and then came the major crash where my body just couldn’t take it anymore and I went into a state of shock.  Thank God I stopped then and there, as the doctor told me if I had taken another energy drink I would have died or seriously injured myself!  Since then I’ve been a constant member of my local gym, refuse to touch energy drinks and getting away from all fizzy drinks. I drink a coffee every now and again, but not like I use to.  Health is now the FIRST wealth and is the only way I can stay alive to run my business!  Going to the gym regularly and working out helps to keep a positive mindset and will keep you going during tough times!

Friends and family are always great; when they support you and your dreams.  Every now and again however we may end up being surrounded by people who are either jealous of the App Business lifestyle or just have a very negative attitude or a “You’re never gonna make it” attitude.  You really need to surround yourself with positive people and positive company.  Choose who you associate with and if you really can’t stay away from a negative friend or relative, then at least try and keep some form of distance or a reduced amount of conversation.  Whether you know it or not, their negativity will DRAIN you and ultimately your business.

App Idea’s are a DIME A DOZEN!  Everyone who’s anyone will come up to you with the “Next Big App” idea!  Sometimes you end up feeling obligated to make an app.  Seriously stay far away from this.  You are the one in the industry day to day, not them, and thus you know better on what works and what doesn’t.  Everyone you start meeting will have some new app idea for you, and pretty soon all this stuff gets into your mentality and can slow you down.  Try to keep your mind clear and focused on your targets rather than taking on items that will just confuse and overwhelm you!  I went through that and continue to go through that myself.  I can assure you that you will hurt yourself in the long run, so try and keep focused!

Belief, Positive Mindset, Persistence and Faith!

You need to have all FOUR items to truly start seeing success!  In order to make your vision of your future real, you need to BELIEVE that it is possible.  You need to have a POSITIVE MINDSET about it.  You need to PERSIST at making it a reality AND during times of falling down (always remember persistence means you get back up again), having FAITH in a higher power (in my case I prayed to God all the time) will be the glue to make everything connect, especially during times when you think it is all over!

These are the books that I have personally read (Except a few of the holy books) and can HIGHLY recommend.  They helped change me (For Better!) and put me in a mind and state of success and abundance and also helped me to see outside of my own bubble.  Over the past 10 years I have amassed a great library which I believe is even more important than money because it helps me get in the mindset to generate abundance and create an abundant lifestyle.  (A selection from the 100+ Books that I have personally read!)
